Recently, the Huangling Ancient Village 8-MGD renovation project in Wuyuan County, Jiangxi, carried out by Beijing Materials Handling Research Institute Co., Ltd. (BMH), part of China National Machinery Industry Corporation (SINOMACH), successfully passed the acceptance inspection from the National Center of Passenger Aerial Ropeway Safety Supervision and Inspection. Designed and manufactured by BMH, this ropeway is the first of its kind to increase the one-way capacity of a mono-cable eight-seat gondola detachable (8-MGD) ropeway to 3,200 passengers per hour (PPH), the highest capacity for this type of ropeway in China.

The windows offer a view of thousands of bamboo trays on the wooden poles attached to them, while the doors lead into a quiet area of ten thousand acres of cultivated land. Huangling derives its name from “bamboo groves across the hills,” and is celebrated for its picturesque views of “villages arranged in a fan-shaped ladder and households drying crops in the autumn sun.” It has a daily visitor capacity of up to 35,000 and once became the first “limited access” tourist destination in Jiangxi Province.

Since 2012, BMH has worked with the Huangling Scenic Area multiple times, successfully building three detachable ropeways and one fixed detachable grip ropeways for the attraction. The Huangling Ancient Village 8-MGD ropeway, which just underwent renovation, has safely operated for 34,360 hours since it was built and has transported more than 10 million passengers. The sustained rise in visitor numbers over the past few years has highlighted the inadequate capacity of the ropeway prior to renovation. Thus, enhancing this capacity is urgent.

With the Huangling ropeway’s unique geographic advantages and high passenger demand in mind, BMH drew on its extensive experience and technical capabilities in designing and manufacturing ropeways. It organized efficiently and advanced the project to ensure that the renovation is completed on time and to a high quality. The renovated Huangling ropeway has a horizontal length of 1,171.7 meters and a maximum vertical rise of 202.316 meters. It includes nine pylons along its length and can reach a top run speed of 6 meters per second. This renovation project is the first to implement hydraulic lift technology for acceleration and deceleration sections, helping to quickly resolve the issue of overcrowding in high-capacity gondolas. As a result, the capacity of the ropeway has increased from 1,800 PPH to 3,200 PPH, achieving the theoretical maximum capacity permitted by national standards for this type of ropeway. Moreover, the renovated ropeway comes with an intelligent information system that not only provides comprehensive monitoring of operational data, the positions and orientations of the gondolas, but also supports a fully paperless approach to daily maintenance and service tasks.

The successful renovation of the Huangling Ancient Village ropeway marks a significant milestone for BMH in achieving the highest passenger capacity to date. The newly renovated ropeway has greatly boosted the reception capacity of the scenic area, alleviating transportation stress and thus providing substantial support for the Huangling Scenic Area’s ambition to achieve 5A status. BMH will keep pushing for innovation and fostering new quality productive forces, thereby leading the ropeway and funicular industry toward more intelligent, greener, and more sustainable development.
