Founded in 1958, Beijing Materials Handling Research Institute Co., Ltd. (BMH) has evolved over more than fifty years from a national institute focusing on hoisting & conveying machinery technology directly under the former Ministry of Machinery Industry into a state-owned tech enterprise. Today, it offers a comprehensive range of services, including scientific research and development, engineering contracting, equipment integration, design and manufacturing, inspection and testing, and supervision. It operates under the umbrella of China National Machinery Industry Corporation (SINOMACH), a Fortune Global 500 company.
BMH has worked in the ropeway and funicular industry for more than 50 years. It has developed many types of the first ropeway in China, and has won the third prize of the national science and technology progress award. After entering the 21st century, BMH has successfully developed a number of leading domestic and international mainstream products, such as new detachable grip ropeway, large reversible aerial tramway, and funicular, which are widely used for tourism, ski resorts and public city transportation.
Several main types of passenger ropeway made in China are first successfully developed by BMH and brought into the market.
In the 1960s and 1970s, the first series of materials ropeway design work was completed by a Chinese enterprise.
In the 1980s, the first reversible aerial tramway (Chongqing Jialing River ropeway), the first mono-cable fixed grip two-seat chairlift (Beijing Xiangshan Park ropeway) and the first mono-cable fixed grip pulsating ropeway (Dalian Laohutan ropeway, which was awarded the third prize of the national science and technology progress award) were developed.
In the 1990s, the first bi-cable reversible gondola in group ropeway (Xikou ropeway in Zhejiang Province) was developed and constructed.
In the new century, BMH took the lead in developing the sophisticated detachable grip ropeway (Qianzhangyan ropeway in Xikou, Zhejiang) in China, which broke the monopoly of foreign enterprises in the market of detachable grip ropeway in China for a long time.
Over the past half century, BMH has designed and constructed more than 500 ropeways and projects hauled by steel rope in China, accounting for nearly half of the number of passenger ropeways in China. Exports of products have been radiated to countries in Asia, Europe, and Africa. In addition, BMH also provides a full chain of technical consulting services for more than 50 imported ropeway projects. Based on the leading position of suspension rope technology in China, BMH also participated in the rope suspension project for the National Stadium (Bird's Nest) during the the Beijing 2008 Summer Olympics and the Five-Hundred-Meter Aperture Spherical Radio Telescope (FAST) and other national key projects.
There are more than 90 professional engineers and more than 100 faculty in the factory.
